Description : AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN STYLE GILT LEAF WOOD AND INLAID BRONZE MOUNTED CULT OF OSIRIS FUNERARY STATUE, IN THE PTOLEMAIC (305-30 BC) TASTE, carved wood with gilt leafing, the mummified style figure stands in ridged frontal pose, his Atef crown of elongated bulbous construction flanked by bronze mounted feathers with inlaid red coral like material, blue glass simulating lapis lazuli, and colored bone, centering a serpent, over pronounced bronze inlaid brow and unusually open eyes, reflecting the Hellenistic influence found in Egypt art during this period of rule, which are inlaid with bronze and stone, above a curled bronze beard with remnants of gauze wrapping, holding a crook and flail. Height: 25 1/2 Width: 6 Depth: 4 1/2 NOTE: The last major temples dedicated to the Cult of Osiris were ordered to close, and eventually closed, sometime during the 3rd and 4th century AD, as per issue by imperial decree.

Condition report : Bronze mounts now covered in heavy green patina, losses of inlay, mounts with apparent glue repairs, the flail does not appear original and crook now lacking, gilt leaf and carving has wear and losses, cracking to wood mostly at back, but over all in good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
