Description : A ZULU STAFF WITH CARVED HEAD, 19th CENTURY Long shaft, carved head of a man at the top with blackened moustache, beard, headring The style of the carving and darkening are typical features of Nguni (Zulu/Tsonga) carving of the 19th century. 75,5cm high Inscription: “AFRICAN. BT WEBSTER 1897. P.1457” near the head on the side. The writing style on the staff is the same as that on two sticks and two figures reproduced in Art and Ambiguity: Perspectives on the Brenthurst Collection of Southern African Art, 1991.Johannesburg: Art Gallery: sticks numbers 134 and 135 p.155, figures Plate 25. PROVENANCE W.D. Webster (1868-1913), ethnographic collector and dealer who held several sales of African material at Earl’s Court in London at the end of the 19th century and produced 30 catalogues. He bought many items from soldiers returning from South Africa. Webster auctioned off the remaining part of his collection in 1904. Illustrated is a page from one of Webster's sale catalogues.
