The antique volumes are bound in paper-covered boards with green leather backstrips. There is light shelfwear to the spines, rubbing to the corners, and some rubbing/scuffing at the edges. There are ink stains to the upper margin of the front board of the text volume. The binding of the text is solid, the plate volume is slightly shaken. The armorial bookplates of Dows Dunham are affixed to the front flyleaves, with his inscription on the pastedowns reading Dows Dunham from G. A. R., Nov. 27, 1922. The pages show mild to moderate age toning and occasional marginal smudging. Between the two volumes are 330 figures, 73 plates, and 30 plans.
