Description : Eastern/Central Africa, Sudan or Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudanese or Zande/Azande or Mangbetu, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine gathering of six forged-steel spear heads in a variety of shapes and sizes, all with tapered socketing shafts. First is a pike-style spear head with a lengthy, rod-form head and an incised midsection. Next are a pair of petaloid spear heads with raised midribs and sharpened edges, one of which is accented with applied black pigment. A spear head with a slender petaloid blade features a series of cut barbs along its midsection. The two most intimidating spear heads have blade heads lined with dozens of barbs on each face as well as a pointed top spike. The pike style and barbed spear heads were traditionally used for fishing.
