Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 23nd to 26th dynasty, ca. 712 to 525 BCE. An incredible round-topped wood funerary stele for Hetepamun with colorful vignettes, hieroglyphic inscription and in great condition. The upper portion is decorated with a winged sun disk. Below are deities, falcon headed Ra-Horakhty and Atum, with a lotus flower and blue pedestal with a vessel resting before the gods and worshiping women dressed in white garments. The central register figures are likely read as 2 parallel scenes, the woman representing the deceased, showing devotion to both gods. A great number of votive stelae survive from the archaeological record. Funerary stelae like this were dedicated to the gods and were presented to temples and sanctuaries by individuals to express their personal devotion. They were also part of small altars erected in private homes and used for good favor in the afterlife and in a funerary context. Translation of the hieroglyphic text in extended description below.
