Descripción : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure standing atop an integral plinth holding a staff and bags crisscrossed over the shoulders. The head has characteristic crested hair, a protruding snout-like mouth with sharp teeth, three vertical scarification marks on the cheeks, and remains of blue pigment within the recessed crevices. This was probably a type of shrine or altar figure, and the wood is lustrous and smooth from age and touch.
