Descrizione : Western Africa, Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A gorgeous, hand-carved wooden kagle-type mask with exaggerated features and a striking visage. The face is comprised of a prominent nose, a parted mouth with enormous lips, projecting triangular eyes, and an overarching brow line with a crown consisting of several triangular spikes. The peripheral rim displays dozens of small perforation holes meant to attach a larger textile costume, and the mask itself is enveloped in a lustrous dark-brown patina. Kagle masks are seen as trouble-makers within the village, meant to disrupt social festivals with aggression and erraticism. Their true purpose is to teach and reinforce how societal institutions behave when disturbed, relying on discipline and order to preserve their foundations. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 11.5 H (29.2 cm), 17.25 H (43.8 cm) on included custom stand.
