Descrizione : KUBA DANCE MASK, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO. Helmet mask accented with copper and mineral pigment, woven grass and seed regalia, early to mid-20th c. Used in dramatic performances. (Provenance: Tad Dale collection, New Mexico). Overall good with signs of use. On custom display stand. 13 3/4'' x 9'' The Bwoon, is associated with Woot‘s “evil brother”. Bwoon personifies a commoner, a pygmy, or one who opposes the king's authority and in other initiation contexts. A royal mask, Bwoom is sometimes worn by the king. Yet unlike Mwaashamboy, Bwoom does not appear at funerals. Despite regional variations, the Bwoom mask conforms to a distinct type. All styles feature strongly rendered proportions dominated by an enlarged brow, broad nose, and usually naturalistic ears.
