Descrizione : Additional Information: A superb figure of a standing male with elaborate hairstyle and carved belt and necklace and bracelets. The arms  ,are articulated so that they could be moved, they were nailed into holes carved into the body. This figure has been painted several time and shows substantial age. , This finely carved figure might come  ,from the Igbo people of southern coastal Nigeria. Between the Niger Delta River and Cross River regions of Nigeria a number of groups including the  ,Ibibio, Anang, Ijo and Ogoni live often times intermixing and exchanging artistic traditions, secret society masquerades and cultural patterns. TheIgbo,  ,Ibibio, Anang and the Ogoni people live in small groups somewhat isolated along the Atlantic coast where through time they developed their own culture and style of carving while drawing upon the sculptural forms of their neighbors.  ,It is interesting in that most sculpture known in Africa there are few examples where the arms and legs are  ,movable rather than being simply carved out of the same piece of wood that the figure was sculpted and fixed in position. The  ,headdress as well as the garment on this figure indicating the person&rsquo,s high status or rank within the Idiong society. The finely carved markings of the body also refer to the high status of the individual. This is a well sculpted and an important  ,example of Ibibio figures . Though the specific use of figures among the Igbo is difficult to define unless the context is known they probably served as altar figures in shrines representing ancestors or title-holders or served to validate the function of the members of the Idiong the senior level of the men&rsquo,s Ekpo society that exercised social control over the village. Facial emphasis upon the full lips and half-closed eyes are found on Ibibio figures and face-masks. The fact that this figure is nearly natural in its color and the wearing down of some of the surfaces re-enforces the idea of age and long use. It has also been repainted through time. This is a striking figure and sculptural presence and would certainly be a prime figure in a collection.  , Additional reading: Fagg, W. Nigerian Images. 1963. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi, PhD. ,
