Descrizione : West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely-carved example of an Ogoni elu (spirit) mask, which are cane wood masks with white-painted faces, narrow eyes, prominent noses and ears, and black-painted embellishments indicative of tattooing or ritual scarification. This particular example has hair in two elaborate braids, which signifies a bride or beautiful maiden of marriageable age, hair coiffed in an attractive manner. Size: 5.5 W x 7.5 H (14 cm x 19 cm).
