Descrizione : Bakongo / Musurongo People, Democratic Republic of Congo: A Superb Carved Soapstone Stele Dr. Preston wrote of this piece in a 1981 paper, The Landana Stele and Lower Zaire River Basin Stelae. A [steatite] stele bears a partially obliterated, handwritten inscription on the tiny map of the Congo glued to the uncarved lower portion of the stone. The idiosyncratic use of a small map as a label on collected specimens is said to have been practiced by Felicien Challaye (1875-1967) who was the deputy of Savorgnan de Brazza (1852-1905) on de Brazza's final (1905) trip to the Congo. The inscription reads: Sc[ulpt]u[re] Tom[bal]e [re]presentant [un] p[e]re qui porte sonen[ant] [a la] terre [ ] ville pres de Landana Specimen [e]n tre The Landana Stele is a rarity among rare objects because its inscription nearly locates its origin, the ambitious intention of its carver to resolve the tension between verisimilitude and conceptual truth encountered by Kongo carvers working in relief, and because of its stylistic and iconographic relationship to other stelae as well as wood and stone carving in the lower Zaire River basin, adjacent Cabinda and Angola. Related stelae are in museums in Leiden, Berg en Dahl, and Santiago de Chile.
