Il lotto Lotto n° 1187
Titolo : African, Democratic Republic Of The Congo High-Ranking Warrior'S Ax, EPOCA : Circa 1890.
Dimensione : 14 1/2 L handle, 10 W blade.
Provenienza : Provenance: Private collection of Wallace Gusler, Williamsburg, VA. Purchased from Sotheby's, New York, in the late 1990s.
Note : Catalogue Note: Wallace Gusler added the following comment concerning this ax: Dr. William H. Sheppard, a Black Presbyterian minister (born March 5, 1865 in Waynesboro, VA, died 1927), who spent twenty years in the Congo area as a missionary, noted that the masks on this type of ax represented a warrior's kills in battle. Modern anthropologists and archaeologists have rejected this approach. They, however, unlike Sheppard, did not spend many years imbedded in the culture which included being adopted by the Kuba King. I believe he reported this correctly. I have handled many of these axes and have owned one with 22 masks. Several examples have an uneven number of masks. One example displays two masks on one side and one on the other. The uneven numbers suggest that they do represent an individual warrior's kill record.
Condition report : Very good as-found condition, blade is slightly loose in the handle, some scattered small old losses and separations to copper sheathing.
