Descrizione : Quartzite glazed in dark green and light blue Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 30th Dynasty Two protection elements of mummy bandages Dimensions: 5.9 x 1.4 x 0.5 cm, 6.4 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm (width x height x depth) Provenance: Private Collection Bruno Wertz Scientific research: Dr. Jan Moje, Free University of Berlin (see references below) A similar mummy bandage element is located at the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt (2230 - 2231b) The two protection elements of mummy bandages are crafted of dark green and light blue glazed quartzite and originate from the Late Period of ancient Egypt, the 26 υ th to the 30 υ th Dynasty (664-342 BCE). It is most probably a jewellery element, which was sewed on to a mummy cloth as apotropaic object, protecting against evil spirits, which was wrapped around the mummified corpse. Both figures are cast in a standing, jackal-headed form. They are wearing long, three-parted wigs that are implied by grooves. The jackal's beak is distinctly discernible. There are three horizontal lines in the area of the upper body, probably indications of mummy bandages. The elements were attached to the cloth with two vertically drilled holes. One is the portrayal of the Horus son Qebehsenuef, who is frequently depicted with the head of a hawk. The second piece is of jackal-headed form, but designed considerably more stylized. Both protection elements stand in very well preserved condition, considering their great age, with normal traces like abrasion of the material. The pieces are covered with a crusty patina. The dimensions of the Horus son are 5.9 x 1.4 x 0.5 cm, and the hawk sizes 6.4 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm (width x height x depth).
