Descrizione : Title: The Tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amen: Discovered by the Late Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter Author: Arthur Cruttenden Mace - Arthur Cruttenden Mace (1874 – 6 April 1928) was an English Egyptologist. [Courtesy Wikipedia.], Howard Carter - Howard Carter was an English archaeologist and Egyptologist who became world famous after discovering the intact tomb of 14th-century BC pharaoh Tutankhamun (colloquially known as King Tut and the boy king). Publisher: George H. Doran Company City: New York Year: 1923/1927 Printing Information: Signed Edition Binding Style: Hardcover Number of Volumes: 2 Full Set: No Width: 6.25 Height: 9 Book Details: KV62 is the standard Egyptological designation for the tomb of the young pharaoh Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, now renowned for the wealth of valuable antiquities it contained. The tomb was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter, underneath the remains of workmen's huts built during the Ramesside Period, this explains why it was largely spared from desecration and from the tomb clearances at the end of the 20th Dynasty, although the tomb was robbed and resealed twice in the period after its completion. The tomb was densely packed with items in great disarray, partly due to its small size, the two robberies, and the apparently hurried nature of its completion. Due to the state of the tomb, and to Carter's meticulous recording technique, the tomb took eight years to empty, the contents all being transported to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia) Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed first U.S. edition of this landmark work of Egyptology. Though a third (and final) volume appeared (in 1933) in the English (Cassell) edition, the American (Doran) edition was terminated with the second volume in 1927, published in a slightly smaller size binding with gilt-lettering and decoration of a scarab in gilt at the top board. The second volume is inscribed (in ink) at the half-title : To Mr. Richard Moon / With every kind thought & wish / Howard Carter, 1927. Inscribed presentation copies are extremely rare and seldom appear on the market ! Both volumes are bound in red cloth, with bright stamped gilt lettering to the spines and front covers. The books show light shelfwear. The bindings are sound. The pages of the first volume are clean and without markings. Those of the second exhibit occasional light foxing, heavier at the front and rear of the volume and on the edges of the text block. This work is illustrated with photographic plates. The second volume is preserved in its original dust jacket, with price of $5.00 on the spine panel.
