A Rare and Large Mamluk Domed Casket, in the name of Emir of Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad (d. 1341), Mamluk Syria or Egypt, First Half 14th century Of circular form in copper, incised and engraved, with a wide cylindrical body resting on three short feet, the flat-shouldered lid surmounted by a hemispherical dome, the box previously inlaid with silver, the shoulder and body decorated with calligraphic inscriptions in thuluth on a background of stylised foliage punctuated by circular medallions decorated with palmettes, the dome with an inscription in naskh punctuated by mandorla-shaped medallions extending into palmettes formed by bifid half-palmettes, the rim of the lid and the base of the dome incised with braid motifs, The lid attached to the body by two beautiful hinges decorated with birds in flight, two other arms for the latch, weld marks on the dome where a finial seems to have been previously added, minor restorations, a few small dents, deformations, one foot missing, scratches. Size: 29.5 cm (diam.), 21 cm (height) Inscriptions On the dome: al-maqarr al-ali al-maw/lawi al-amiri al-kabiri / al- 'alimi al-'amili / al-Maliki al-Nasiri (His Highness, the Lordly, the Great Amir, the Wise, the Diligent, [in the service of] al-Malik al-Nasir) On the shoulder: al-maqarr al-'ali al-mawlawi / al-amiri al-kabiri al-'alimi / al-'amili al-'adili al-muja/hhidi al-Maliki al-Nasiri 'azza [ansarahu] (His Highness, the Lordly, the Great Amir, the Wise, the Diligent, the Just, the Champion of Faith, [in the service of] of al-Malik al-Nasir [may his victories be glorious]) On the body: al-mawlawi al-amiri al-kabi/ri al-'alimi al-'amili / al-kamili al-kamili / al-Maliki al-Nasiri (The Lordly, the Great Amir, the Wise, the Diligent, the Perfect [in the service of] al-Malik al-Nasir) Unpublished to date, this box is one of a very small group of circular caskets in the form of domed architecture produced during the Mamluk period. Four other examples of the same type are known to us: three are held in public institutions in Doha (Museum of Islamic Art, MW.468 .2007), Jerusalem (L. A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art, M 144-71) and St Petersburg (Hermitage Museum, EG-765 a,b), while a fourth, from the collection of P. H. Delaporte, Consul General in Cairo (1848-56), was sold on 3 and 4 March 1986 at Hôtel Drouot (Ader Picard Tajan, lot 338). Within this set, two groups differing in size stand out: on the one hand, the boxes from Doha and Saint Petersburg, which are small in diameter (10.5 and 11.5 cm) and did not originally have a finial , on the other, the boxes from Jerusalem, the Paris sale and ours, which are larger in diameter (37.5, 31.5 and 29.5 cm respectively) and whose dome was topped by a finial, which has not been preserved in the case of our box. Like the other four examples, this one can be dated to the first half of the 14th century, and more specifically to the reign of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad (r. 1293-1341). The inscriptions in naskh and thuluth that run the length of the dome, shoulder and body give the title of an anonymous great amir (al-amir al-kabir) from the house of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad. The same title appears on the box sold in Paris in 1986, whose proportions, hinges and decoration are almost identical to those on our box, indicating that the two works were probably produced by the same workshop, perhaps as a gift from the Sultan on the appointment of a high-ranking emir. The total absence of Chinese-influenced decoration, which first appeared on Mamluk metalwork around 1325, suggests that these two boxes date from the first decades of the 14th century. These caskets, which are part of the trend of objects adopting architectural forms, nevertheless differ drastically in their proportions from their counterparts produced in the Persian world (we might mention, for example, the boxes in the Walters Art Museum, no. 54.516, and in the Louvre Museum, OA 3355). Mamluk pieces are characterised by a low, circular body, a broad, very slightly sloping shoulder and a hemispherical dome. Their profile is reminiscent of one of the most famous monuments in the Islamic world, the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. This monument underwent major restoration work on the dome and cupola in 1318-19, a vast undertaking launched by the Mamluk sultan al-Nasir Muhammad. While we must be careful not to draw unfounded parallels, it is striking to note that all five boxes bear inscriptions either in the name of the sultan (St Petersburg and Doha) or in the names of emirs from his household (Jerusalem, Paris sale and our box). Some researchers have speculated that these boxes were used for incense. It is possible however, that they can be understood as objects commemorating the Mamluk sultan's involvment in the restoration of the Dome of the Rock. Estimation 80 000 - 100 000 €
