Descrizione : Franz Ludwig Catel (1778 Berlin - 1856 Rom): Figure study with soldiers, c. 1806, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: lower left inscribed by the artist's hand: Catel. Date: c. 1806 Description: The Berlin painter, draughtsman, watercolourist and etcher Franz Ludwig Catel came to Rome in 1811, where he devoted himself to landscape and genre painting with great artistic and financial success until the end of his life in 1856. After his first private drawing lessons in Berlin with the engraver Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki, who was a friend of the Catel family, and his studies at the academies of arts in Berlin (1794-1797) and Paris (1798-1800) and an intervening stay in Switzerland in 1797, he learned oil painting for several years in Paris from 1807 onwards - he had already been appointed a member of the Berlin Academy in 1806. Between 1798 and 1806, however, he initially worked from Berlin and Paris on numerous illustration drawings for contemporary German and French book and almanac production, including the works of Goethe and Schiller, Johann Joachim Campe, Johann Heinrich Voss and the Frenchman Jacques Delille. The sketch sheet presented here - the designation Catel at the lower left can possibly be regarded as a later signature - is one of the few early drawings by Franz Ludwig Catel known to date. The sheet shows 12 sketches of French soldiers as head or half-figure studies in a small space next to each other. At the bottom right is another sketch of a Greek-antique looking standing man in a long robe with headdress and walking staff in his hands, which does not directly refer to a military context. Above this, one recognises the light sketch of a branch with leaves. This composition on a study sheet (formerly from a sketchbook?) of soldiers will be studies after life, which Catel will have drawn on or after 27 October 1806, when the French army occupied Berlin. The famous corps of Mamelukes (Mamelouks de la Garde impé,riale / Mamelukes of the Imperial Guard), a unit of light cavalry raised by Napolé,on Bonaparte during the Egyptian campaign and in his service from 1801 to 1815, marched into Berlin together with the French in their oriental uniforms and with their typical headdresses. The verso side of the sheet shows fragments of perspective calculations and a list of figures, probably referring to architecture. Franz Ludwig Catel's brother was the architect Friedrich Ludwig (Louis) Catel (1776-1819), both worked as interpreters for the French in 1806, and from about 1801 they jointly ran a hitherto highly successful factory for musical pieces, which, however, came to a standstill due to the events of the war, especially the defeats at Jena and Auerstedt in 1806. The notations on the reverse may have been written in this context. After his return from Paris in 1801, Franz Ludwig Catel himself gave lectures on linear and aerial perspective at the Dresden Academy.Apart from the old name inscription in pencil, which may even have been made by the artist himself, the drawing can certainly be compared stylistically with other drawings by Catel from his Berlin years, among them with a study for a composition by Frederick the Great after the Battle of Kunersdorf, made between 1800 and 1806, in which Prussian soldiers of the late 18th century (so-called 'Lange Kerls'), drawn in pencil in a very similar manner, can be seen in the background, and the artist's preliminary studies for August Wilhelm Iffland's Almanach fü,r Theaterfreunde for the year 1807, also executed in pencil in 1806.
