Description: The tomb of the praetor and high-ranking priest Caius Cestius († before 12 B.C.) on the Via Ostiense from Rome to Ostia causes astonishment in the viewer. Similar to the Egyptian pyramids on the plateau of Giza, a monumental structure rises up next to the Roman arterial road. 36.4 m high and with a side length of about 29.5 m, it appears slightly elevated and yet clearly shows the models on the Nile. Built in the early first half of the first century, it can be considered one of the earliest examples of historically inspired construction - not to use the term historicism, which was coined much later - as it clearly refers back to the Egyptian antiquities, which were already over 2500 years old at that time. Although it is not the only Roman tomb of this kind, the Cestius pyramid is the only one of its kind that has been preserved. It illustrates the enthusiasm for the Orient that emanated from Egypt and that was evident in Rome since the conquest of the Nile by Emperor Augustus. As a member of the Septemviri epulonum, Caius Cestius was one of the most influential priests in Rome. Obviously impressed by the ancient Egyptian culture of burial and remembrance of the pharaohs, who were also blessed with divine consecration, he had a funerary monument erected on the model of the Pyramid of Khufu. The Cestius Pyramid is therefore a vivid example of the tradition and adoption of an architectural form that was copied in a scaled-down cork model, again around 1750 years after the 'mental transport' from the plateau of Giza to the arterial road of Rome, again on a smaller scale.
