Provenance: Collection of Madame Mica Salabert (d.1991.), who married Francis Salabert in 1920, the celebrated musical editor. Ader Tajan, Paris, 8th June 1993, lot 125. From an early age, Mica Salabert had shown a talent for art and interior decoration. Later on, she enrolled at the Ecole du Louvre where she excelled in Egyptology, and after her marriage she made several educational trips to Egypt. Madame Salabert collected in the course of her lifetime rare and authentic objects which made her collection at 88, Avenue Foch, Paris, a harmonious ensemble of great quality. Comparative Literature: Serge Grandjean, Empire Furniture, London, 1966, plate 19 where he illustrates a satinwood and mahogany commode au gout Egyptien with the figure of Isis, stamped by Jacob Freres, inlaid with pewter and ebony conceived in a similar vein to the present bed (now in the Musee national de Fontainebleau). He also illustrates, op. cit., plate 36, a meridienne by Jacob Desmalter with the same curved end with an almost identical laurel leaf spray mount. Jacob Freres rue Meslee was the stamp of Georges II and Francois-Honore-Georges 1796-1803. The design of this bed 'en bateau' was first made by the Jacob brothers for Madame Recamier. This bed is in the characteristic 'au retour d'Egypte ' style with the use of motifs inspired by the decoration on ancient Egyptian monuments. It is interesting to note that in the catalogue of the exhibition Egyptomania at the Louvre, Paris, 20th January-18th April 1994, p. 196-197, fig.104, where a drawing by Thomas Hope (1769-1831) from plate 10 of Household Furniture and Interior Decoration from designs by Thomas Hope,London 1807, illustrates the bedroom or Lararium of Hope's house. The fireplace in the bedroom is flanked by Egyptian male figures identical in design to those upon the feet of the present bed. In fig. 105, there is illustrated a mount (originally from the fireplace in Hope's bedroom at Duchess Street (since demolished, referred to above)) a figure identical to the male Egyptian figure on this bed.
