Born in 1942 in Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa, Dumile Feni rose to international recognition for his representations of the harsh social, political and economic realities that faced his home country during his lifetime. With its elegant and rhythmic strokes as well as its monochromatic hue, a quality that would become a trademark of the artist's practice, the present work reflects the artist's ability to capture the desires of the South African people for a democratic country with a new set of ideals and principles. The artist exhibited widely in South Africa, London and the United States and was chosen to represent his country at the 1967 Bienal de Sao Paulo.
