Aidan Victor Walsh (1932- ) KAROO VALLEY signed and dated 02, marked with the artist's name and title on a label on the reverse 24 by 48cm Donated by the artist. He began Durban's first gallery dedicated to regular monthly exhibitions of contemporary art, showing, amongst others, Walter Battiss, Cecily Sash, Patrick O'Connor and Andrew Verster. Numbers of today's established artists were given their first shows at the Walsh Marais Gallery, Bronwen Findlay, Malcolm Christian and Paul Stopforth. He was the curator of the NSA Gallery for several years. A three month stay in Paris at the Cite des Arts was the catalyst for his decision to paint full time. Since then he has held numerous solo and joint exhibitions in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town. His public commissions include portraits of Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Thabo Mbeki and Joe Nduli. He has painted, in addition, numbers of privately commissioned portraits. His work is to be found in public and private collections here and abroad.

A painter, writer of short stories, articles and radio plays lecturer and designer.
