Notes : In the late 1950s Jean Welz visited the theme of motherhood several times. Having always been inspired by the female form, this focus on maternity was inspired not only by the feminine, but also by the change and inspiration a woman undergoes during pregnancy. "That change in womanhood inspired Welz speaks for itself. Before the umbilical cord is cut at birth, the woman is aware of the change that takes place within her, every day for nine months. Physically, mentally and spiritually she is involved with the growing of another individual inside her. Pregnancy...is one of the most important transformations which takes place in the woman."BIBLIOGRAPHY: E. Miles, The World of Jean Welz, (Cape Town, 1997), p. 91
