Description : Yoruba Equestrian Figure Nigeria H: 25 cm (approx. 10”) Estimated age: end of the 19th or early 20th century Provenance: French private collection The Yoruba people are an ethnic group of southwestern and north-central Nigeria as well as southern and central Benin, known together as Yorubaland. The Yoruba worked with a wide array of materials in their art including: bronze, leather, terracotta, ivory, textiles, copper, stone, carved wood, brass, ceramics, and glass. A unique feature of Yoruba art is its striking realism, which, unlike most African art, chooses to create human sculptures in vivid, realistic and life-sized forms. Such equestrian figures were placed on altars in shrines or displayed at special ceremonies. Leaders and ancestors were often displayed on horseback to support their status as great warriors or leaders. A nicely carved rider on his horse, holding a spear in one hand, the rein in the other. A very naturalistic sculpted “Yoruba face,” old patina.
