Description : West Africa, Ghana, Ashanti (Asante), ca. early to mid-20th century CE, Burkina Faso, Gan or Lobi, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine collection of 3 brass and iron bracelets that each contain large ornamental zoomorphic, anthropomorphic, or bell ornaments. The first band is brass, made by Ashanti artisans to articulate on a pin hinge, the terminal ends are shaped as human heads and along the length is a scorpion and a pair of overlapping crocodiles. The other brass Ashanti piece is an open band adorned with 3 large spiralized clam shaped bells- each contain a clapper ball and emits high tinkling tones. The last is likely made by Lobi peoples using a twisted iron band and a separately cast copper pair of chameleons are welded onto the band. The lizards are resting atop each other as a mated pair, and it is custom in Lobi religious practice to place altarpieces in the form of chameleons!
