Late Period, 26th to 30th Dynasty Scarab decorated with horizontal lines in dark paste Dimensions: 3.2 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm (width x height x depth) Provenance: Private Collection Bruno Wertz Scientific research: Dr. Jan Moje, Free University of Berlin (see references below) This scarab originates most possibly from the Late Period of ancient Egypt, the 26 υ th to the 30 υ th Dynasty (664-342 BCE). He is created of quartzite with a green pith. The shards of this small scarab are decorated with horizontal lines in dark paste, a rather unusual way of designing the surface of a scarab. All legs are strongly distinguished are protruding relatively far up. A late dating of this piece can be assumed because of the simple design, however, this fact cannot be entirely verified. In ancient Egypt, the scarab was adored as a symbol of reincarnation because he was said to be able to propagate himself. Scarabs were used in versatile form as amulets and protectors of scripts and name seals. The scarab is in age-according condition, with usual traces. The surface is relatively strongly abraded, so merely few details are discernible. Base and feet are broken off the back. Today, the scarab is covered in dark patina, and partially the beginning of a malachite coloured patina becomes visible. The dimensions of the scarab are 3.2 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm (width x height x depth).
