>Robert Bohlen, MichiganImportante collection privée américaineNotes : This is a rare mask created for ceremonies occurring during rites of
passage for young men to adulthood among the Mbunda. Most of the masks
were made of barkcloth, but this mask, thought to be a character called
Sachihongo, or old diviner, is one of the very few made of wood (Yoshida
in Phillips, Africa: Art of a Continent, 1995, p. 166). Characterized by
large, rounded proportions and fierce or haunting expression, see
Philips op. cit. for a related mask formerly in the collections of Jacob
Epstein, London, and Carlo Monzino.Christie's, Salle de vente
