Consulter la cote et le prix de Marka Ceremonial Janus Mask

Description : The Marka are neighbors of the Bamana (Bambara) people, and their artistic styles share striking similarities. Like the Bambara, the Marka fashion their masks with very small mouths and raised lips at the bottom of an elongated face. The nose is usually extremely long and elegantly thin, while the eyes are cast downward in a show of respect that is used in many African masks. Janus masks such as this one are double faced to show power an authority.Marka's use small colorful tassels and cowry shells in their wooden masks. The intricate designs on these sheets are reminiscent of the ritual scarification of Marka hunters, with similar shallow repetitive patterns carved into the wood where it is exposed. These masks were used by the Marka in ceremonies to ensure a successful hunt, plentiful fishing catch, or bountiful harvest, as well as circumcision ceremonies. Circumcision is an extremely important event in the Marka culture, confirming an adolescent boy's worth among his peers and legitimizing him as a full member of the society. The ceremony is performed at the end of a week long celebration involving all members of the community. These masks were also used in ceremonies when the men advanced up the social ladder. This beautiful Janus mask features a wonderful modernist form with an elongated neck and abstract body. The great patina shows fantastic encrustation from use in the ceremonies.Provenance:These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum.Measures approximately 37 x 18 x 12.5 with a total weight of 15 lbs.
