À propos du lot
n° 3171
Titre : Kongo Peoples, Large Fetish Nkisi Nkonde
Dimensions : approx. 49h x 20w x 18dProvenance : Acquired by the present owner from Dr. David Rilling, accompanied by a 1999 email referencing original acquisition in Cameroon by Emmanuel Waha, an African art dealer, in 1984Notes : After a wood carver completes the figure, it is activated by the Nganga (Shamun), who charges the belly with potent materials such as seeds, animal parts and other organic materials. Animal hide was applied to the top of the head, beard and legs. This ritual would cause the Nkisi spirit to inhabit the figure. The white pigment on the eyes and glass in the belly represent energy emanating from the figure. Individuals seeking protection would have the Nganga evoke the power of the spirit by driving a piece of metal into it or applying other materials. It was used to bind agreements, protect from wrathful spirits, heal, and it could even boomerang a curse. Belief in the power of this spirit would keep peace in the community.Condition report : Good, head and feet with expansion cracks, some adornments loose and able to be removed, wear consistent with age and use **Condition reports are rendered as specialist opinion by the staff of the Auction House and not as statements of fact.
