Description : Iron blade and bronze female figural handle with leather fringe details. Etching and rings in iron blade signify tribe, possibly Nigerian or Cameroonian in origin. Circa 1930-1940s. Measures approx 28 inches in length including handle. Bronze figural Handle measures approx 9.5 inches in length. Knife has surface wear consistent with age and use. African Art, Tribal Art, African tool, ethnographic Art, African folk art, collectible African arts. Property of a New York Private Collection. ‘While implements such as hoes, throwing knives and other weapons serve a utilitarian function, in some cases these objects were also used as currency. Fabricated from copper, bronze, iron and brass, these objects constitute some of the most dramatic and varied of African currency forms. Hoe money came in the shape of a heart, spade, paddle, teardrop, trowel, anchor or blade. In fact, the shapes began to overlap the objects classified as knives or blades.
