Description : Authentic age and use measures approx. 10 x 6 Provenance: Important Montecito estate African Collection Note on Afere Ifa: Among the Yoruba the answers to questions about the future and the solutions to problems in life may be obtained by consulting the deity Ifa, the god of fate, certainty, order, wisdom, and the companion of Eshu, the god of uncertainty. Oracles are received through the priest of Ifa, the babalawo (³father of secrets²) whose complex equipment is often decorated with carved designs and figures. A bowl, called agere ifa (Roache 1974: 21) is used to store the diviner¹s sixteen palm nuts. During the divination process the priest attempts to transfer the sixteen nuts from his left hand to his right hand. If two nuts remain in his left hand he traces a short vertical mark in the dust on his tray, and if one nut remains he traces two vertical marks. The process is repeated four times, revealing one of sixteen patterns (odu) which indicates a particular verse an the ifa literature. Recited by the babalawo, the verse discloses the forces which have brought misfortune and suggests solutions to the problems. – Prof. Christopher Roy, School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa
