Description : Face mask Azande, Zaire wood, light brown and dark brown patina, of elongated, oval hollowed form, lancet-shaped pierced eyes flanking a short nose, an oval pierced mouth underneath, facial plane and coiffure remained natural coloured, carved with incised scarifications with dark paint rubbed into the deepenings, pierced in the chin area (partly broken), slightly dam., cracks, missing parts (backside at the rim), on base, Zande masks are rare. They were used in Mani society as well as in funeral ceremonies. Stylistically they are linked to the masks of the Central African Republic, with suggests that they were imported about 1910, the same time as the Mani. H: 38 cm, (4638/008)
