Provenance: New York private collectionThis pair includes a Chiwara mask and a clay shell vessel. The Bambara people carve the Chiwara mask, a now iconic image of African art. While there are several versions of the story, the discovery of agriculture is credited to the hero Chi Wara, a half antelope, half human figure born from the union of the sky goddess Mousso Koroni and an earth spirit in the shape of a cobra. The Chi Wara came to earth to teach humans to sow crops, and thus is honored at both sowing and harvest festivals. The mask is in fair condition with significant damage to the clay base, which has been heavily fractured. The clay vessel is in fair condition with significant ware to the surface and form. The chiwara mask is 26.25 x 7.25 (height x diameter). The shell vessel is 5.75 x 7 (height x diameter).
