Description : Mali, Africa, early 20th c. Door locks are found in Bamana and Dogon society in many different styles. They are typically the bolt case found on wooden doors adorning granaries. Locks are bridal gifts, the action of the bolt through the lock symbolic of the sexual act. This example is carved in the form of an abstract human figure, likely an ancestor of the betrothed, and is incised with intricate, stylized geometric carving. 20T x 18W
