Consulter la cote et le prix de African Dan Wood Divination Mask

Description : West Africa, Ivory Coast / Liberia, Dan peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A remarkable hand-carved wood divination mask of intriguing form. The stylized visage presents rectangular, openwork eyes beneath a projecting brow, a broad nose that spans to the width of the face, and a huge mouth that extends forwards showing thin lips and a slender tongue. A large pair of ears flanks the fascinating countenance, each adorned by a relief cross on their outer sides, possibly representing ceremonial scarification, and 4 risen vertical bands decorate the brow. The periphery of the brow is additionally embellished by 13 risen dots. Boasting a lustrous, mocha-hued surface, the abstract vizard is adorned with red and brown pigments, as well as tan-colored desiccated earth and the periphery of the verso is lined with a series of annular drill holes, allowing the piece to be strapped to a costume. Please note that the Lucite stand is for photography purposes only. Size: 5.625 L x 7.25 W x 12.375 H (14.3 cm x 18.4 cm x 31.4 cm) The Dan people, who live in Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, produce masks for nearly every element or occasion of their society, including education, war, peace, and entertainment.
