Notes : Raised during the Depression in London, Robert Hodgins spent much of his childhood in art museums. The art works he saw offered him visions of alternative realities: "fragmentary, small happenings of extraordinariness in the grey block of my life". In 1966 he took up a position as a lecturer in the Fine Arts Department at the University of the Witwatersrand. He produced few works during this period, yet as Esmé Berman suggests Hodgins's "enduring association with the university began a new chapter of professional commitment as a mentor to a generation of aspiring artists". Nevertheless, it was only when he retired at the age of sixty-three that Hodgins came into his own, finally able to devote his time to his own work. Bibliography B. Atkinson, Robert Hodgins, (Cape Town, 2002), pp.16-19.
