Titre : LEPSIUS (CARL RICHARD) Denkmäler aus Ägypten und Äthipien, 12 vol.
Notes : Carl Richard Lepsius (1810-1884), "the Egyptologist generally considered second only to Champollion" (Blackmer), was chosen to lead the Prussian expedition to Egypt in 1842-1845. The original intention was to survey the monuments, but Lepsius also excavated the site of the Labyrinth at Fayûm, eventually sending back to Berlin nearly 15,000 Egyptian antiquities and plaster casts. This huge work, including the complete set of plates, is the official account of the results of the expedition. The text appeared in 5 volumes, after Lepsius's death, published between 1897-1913.The volumes are arranged in six divisions in near chronological order: vol. I-II: Topographie und Architectur; vol. III-IV: Denkmäler des Alten Reichs; vol. V-VIII: Denkmäler des Neuens Recihs; vol. IX: Denkmäler aus der Zeit der Griechischen und Römischen Herrschaft; vol. X: Äthiopische Denkmäler; vol. XI-XII. Inschriften mir ausschluss der Hieroglyphischen.Provenance: St. Deiniol's Library, Hawarden (probably gifted by Sir William Gladstone).Bonhams 3, Salle de vente
