Description : Signed "A. Rodin" on the base, identified on fragmentary labels, including label from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, under the base. Bronze with deep brown patina, ht 9 1/4 in. CONDITION: Very good. PROVENANCE: Gift from the artist to Eric Pape, Boston, 1894. Exhibitions: "Grand Cuban-American Fair." New York, 1895-96; "Loan Collection of Paintings by Claude Monet and Eleven Sculptures by Auguste Rodin," the Copley Society, Boston, 1905. N.B.: "Sphinx moderne" is Rodin's fiery reinterpretation of the figural group "The Sirens" of 1887. "The Sirens" was conceived as a portion of the left panel of Rodin's Gates of Hell", but whereas "The Sirens" languor and writhe in an ethereal dreamworld "Sphinx moderne" is aggressively erotic in pose and expression. Details of face, hair and limbs are depicted in an abstracted impressionistic shorthand which serves to intensify the erotic qualities of the figure. Rodin presented this piece to Eric Pape in 1894 after the two had worked together. Pape's interest in the arts of ancient Egypt is well documented; it may be for this reason that Rodin choose "Sphinx moderne" is documented in a 1902 photograph of Rodin in his studio [see AUGUSTE RODIN, Descharnes and Chabrun, editia Lausanne/ La Biblioteque Des Arts, Paris, 1967, p. 227]. Pape also thought highly of the piece and prominently exhibited it in his studio [see illustration left].
