n° 359
Titre : AN EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE COSMETIC JAR IN THE FORM OF A SOW
Provenance : Formerly in a French private collection, acquired in the first half of the 20th Century. Notes : No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.Stone cosmetic vessels in the form of or decorated with pigs are known from the Predynastic Period (Petrie Museum UC15752 - UC15754). However the resemblance of the above sow to faience amulets produced from the Third Intermediate Period onwards would suggest a later date. Cf. C. Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p. 35, no. 32a for a similar amulet of a sow. Christie\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s, Salle de vente
