Notas : ABOUT THE ARTWORK This impressive large-scale painting by Zander Blom is an early work that formed part of the artist’s first solo exhibition with Stevenson in Cape Town in 2010. Drawing on the actions and techniques of Abstract Expressionism, Blom’s work centres on the material qualities of paint and the process of creation. Untitled 1.11 exemplifies his mastery in revealing the dynamic potential of oil paint on raw linen canvas. With a blend of passionate intensity and precise control, the composition reveals Blom's innovative manipulation of the medium. Reflecting on this series of paintings, the artist wrote: “There are few things as gratifying as waking up to the smell of linseed oil and paint and stumbling through the chaos of torn-up books and empty tubes with a freshly squeezed palette of colour in hand. Figuring out your next move, brushstrokes staring back at you from the tussle of the night before. Now I find myself in my ever-changing swamp, knee-deep in references, smeared with paint, avoiding email, watching the paintings paint themselves…” In this piece, the tactile nature of the built-up paint profoundly influences the painting's narrative and significance, revealing a raw stylistic elegance and beauty. The colour palette is confined to shades of black, interspersed with thick swathes of white and grey. The painting's intentionally vague title invites personal interpretation and meaning. The clear and compelling dramatic nature of the work, with its captivating dynamic abstraction, provokes a strong emotional reaction. Marelize van Zyl COLLECTOR'S NOTE Zander Blom’s latest 2023 solo exhibition Monochrome Paintings was presented at Stevenson in Cape Town.In 2022, Zander Blom featured in the group exhibition We Paint! at Beaux-Arts de Paris. Curated by Cristiano Raimondi, the exhibition is an appraisal of contemporary painting, informed by the Jean-François Prat Prize. In the same year, he also presented Garage Party at Signs and Symbols Contemporary Gallery, his first solo exhibition in New York.Blom received the third Jean-François Prat Prize in Paris in 2014 and in 2016 exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo as part of the fifth edition of the contemporary art prize. That same year, he was also included in Vitamin P3: New Perspectives in Painting, an anthology of contemporary painting published by Phaidon. COLLECTIONS: The artist is represented in numerous local and international collections, notably, the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection, Stuttgart; Societe Generale Collection, Paris and Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town.
