Notas : COLLECTOR'S NOTE Reference is an innate characteristic to Richard Mudariki’s works. Born in early revolution Zimbabwe, Mudariki grew up witnessing the political ruling of the ZANU- PF which saw consequences like hyper-inflation, lack of service delivery, corruption and wealth injustice. Having a lived experience to injustice, Mudariki parodies the Zimbabwean political landscape with his comical portrayal of politicians and political events. Mudariki not only references real-life events, but also makes allusions to artworks. In The Slave Mudariki references South African artist, Stanley Pinker’s (1924-2012) artwork Kos is op die Tafel (Afrikaans for Food is on the Table), which is in the University of Pretoria collection. Painted in 1992 the work depicts a slave figure in the context of the pre-1994 South African political landscape. Mudariki brings his own twist to the artwork referencing his lived experience in his home country, depicting infamous Zimbabwean leaders such as Robert Mugabe, depicted in green. The artist has exhibited extensively both locally and internationally, exhibitions include: Mutara Wenguva (Time Line) with Sanlam Art Collection, Johannesburg and Cape Town in 2017; Nano 1:1 at Barnard Gallery in Cape Town in 2017; A Painting Today at Stevenson, Cape Town in 2017; My Reality at Johans Borman Fine Art, Cape Town 2012; and Post Election Selection at Gallery Delta in Zimbabwe: 2008. Micaela Wentzel Stanley Pinker, os is op die Tafel, 1992, University of Pretoria, South Africa
