Notas : Shawzin studied painting in London under the colourist Martin Bloch. Ever the perfectionist, she would paint several portraits of each of her Herero and Mponga models and only keep the best one. The colour palette in the present lot comes from her love of Africa and its earthy soil-derived tribal textures of red sienna and yellow ochre. Tragically many of her oil paintings were lost in a fire, making this painting exceptionally rare.
