Scholz (ed.), The Levinson Collection (Pretoria, 1986), no. 278.In the present work the women wear typical Herero dress. Given the intimate nature of the portrait, the sitters may have been known to the artist, possibly as part of the Levinson household. Many Herero adopted Western-style dress after European contact in the mid-19th century. Herero women's customary costume has changed little since that time, and is typified by an ankle-length dress supported by layered petticoats and a button-up bodice with long sleeves. The dress is usually accessorised with a distinctive cloth headpiece, thought to suggest the form of cattle horns.Stella Shawzin is sister of the late Olga Levinson.
