Procedencia : Provenance The collection of Dr. J. E. Bain; By descent; A private collection. Previously in the possession of Dr. J. E. Bain, the provenance of the present work bares some monumental historical significance. Upon leaving South Africa in the very early 1960s as a young doctor specialising in psychiatry, Jane Bain was working with a specialist who was studying the validity of using testimonial confessions extracted under duress. A case study of this was the Rivonia Treason Trials which infamously trials put Nelson Mandela under imprisonment. Bain was being followed and intimidated by BOSS (the Bureau of State Security); an oppressive and feared organisation of the Apartheid government of the time who reported directly to the Prime Minister. Naturally, she was terrified and went to Canada as a political refugee before moving to the United States where she would join as a fellow of Harvard University and was awarded a Purple Heart medal for her further work with Vietnam veterans. It was not until her retirement that she would return to Cape Town where she would live until the end of her life.
