Notas : Pieter Wenning was born in 1873 in The Hague and lived and worked in South Africa from 1905; he died in 1921 in Pretoria. Wenning was the first South African artist to inspire a school of painting that fused his early admiration for 'The Hague school', with his poetic response to the South African landscape. This 'Cape Impressionism' was to become a highly influential style that was taken up by many artists such as Gregoire Boonzaier, Terence McCaw and Robert Broadley. It was during his first visit to the Cape in 1916 that Wenning found his talent as a landscape painter. The landscapes are distinctive in their colour and construction and his bold use of colour accents and black outlines keep the surfaces alive, the use of the green pigment accent found in the above work was unique to Wenning's work. "Most of the remaining four years of his life he spent in Cape Town, painting with obsessional dedication. Of his ultimate oeuvre of approximately 300 oil canvases, at least two-thirds are scenes of the quiet wooded suburbs and the picturesque old corners of the Mother City." Bibliography E.
