Notas : Matthew Hindley is an accomplished South African artist who won the Michaelis Prize, awarded by the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 2002. Usually, the artist uses professional models and actors that he does not know to create his tableaus. Pieter is unique in that it is a portrait of Matthew Hindley's good friend, the critically acclaimed photographer, Pieter Hugo. In Pieter, Hindley creates interesting illusions of separation between the viewer and the subject, most noticeably the feeling that there is a sheet of glass in front of Pieter who appears to be pushing against something with his outstretched hands.
