Descripción : Wood carved and painted mask from the Songye Tribe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Black tone wood with etched details painted white and red. Measures approx 14 inches in length by 8 inches in width by 7 inches in depth. Mask has surface wear like fading of color consistent with age. Among the small Songye chiefdoms along the Lomami River, maskers were emissaries of the ruling elite, who relied on the ideology of witchcraft and sorcery to sustain their rule.
