Descubra la tasación y los precios de esta y más obras de arte africano en Africartmarket. Saharan Acheulian Chert Hand Axe

Descripción : North Africa, Sahara, Acheulian, ca. 1.2 million to 500,000 years ago. A massive bifacial chert stone tool that may have functioned as a hand axe or other chopping and scraping implement made by Homo ergaster or Homo erectus. The lanceolate axe has a broad ovoid shape, tapering to an acutely sharpened edge. The stone is a gorgeous chert with rich orange hues with glossy, worn patina from age and weathering. During the time of this axe, there were large elephant and hippopotamus species as well as giraffe species in Africa that would have been hunted by primitive humans. An axe like this was necessary to butcher such large kills. Acheulean hand axes represent some of the earliest tools made by our ancestors.
