Descripción : [ Autographs ] REPUBLIC OF TEXAS NAVY BUTTON Rare Texas Republic Button in mint condition. Reference: Albert's Tx1A Republic of Texas Navy two-piece 21.5mm with rope edging. Backmarked J.M.L . & W.H. Scovill/ Waterbury / Extra Superfine. Scovill original order 1836. The device displays a star resembling a starfish with a foul anchor to the side and beneath, surrounded by the inscription Republic of Texas with lined Field, 21.5mm. When hostilities broke out between Texas and Mexico, the General Council of the provisional government of Texas realized the need for a navy to protect Galveston and ensure lines of supply between New Orleans and Texas. On November 25, 1835, the General Council passed a bill providing for the purchase of four schooners and for the organization of the Texas Navy. In January 1836 the schooners with 28 guns between them were purchased, and the Texas Navy came into being. These ships were the 60-ton William Robbins, a former privateer that was rechristened Liberty the 125-ton Invincible, which had been built in Baltimore for the African slave trade, the 125-ton Independence which had been the US Revenue Cutter Ingham, and the 125-ton Brutus. President David G. Burnet appointed officers for the ships, naming senior Captain Capt. Charles E. Hawkins the first commodore of the new Navy. The enterprise ended however in mid-1837 by which time all of the ships had been lost, having been sold or lost at sea or in skirmishes with Mexican vessels Nevertheless, the young Navy provided valuable service controlling the sea-lanes and protecting the Texas coast. In particular, the denial of supplies to Santa Anna's forces on their way to San Jacinto was a major factor in Houston's victory. Still seeing a need to protect their waters, a second Navy was commissioned by the Republic in 1839. Though again providing valuable service providing protection for the Republic along its coast and thwarting Mexican attempts to reconquer lost territory, when it came time for repairs or replacement, the Texas government simply could not afford the expense The Texas Navy managed to survive through the largess of interested civilians and the determination of its officers and the citizens of Galveston who refused to let the ships be auctioned. It ended only when a truce was declared with Mexico and the annexation of Texas by the United States when the ships were transferred to the US Navy. This historic artifact is accompanied by a brief history of this intrepid Texas Navy. MB:
