Descripción : West Africa, Cameroon, Grasslands, Bamum or Bamileke, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A pottery tobacco pipe-bowl in the form of standing men dressed as soldiers in European style uniforms. They stand back-to-back against a vertical tube which serves as a place to insert the shaft of the pipe stem, and their tall military caps form the receptacle openings. Smoking tobacco was customary in Cameroon - both men and women carried pipes and tobacco to use throughout the day, but such a large and ornate bowl may have been an artistic endeavor or used as a gift.
