Descripción : A PORPHYRY URN AND COVER, PROBABLY ROMAN IMPERIAL, 2ND CENTURY A.D., OR LATER 23.5cm. diameter, 29.5cm. high, 9.5 by 11.75 in. of massive rounded form with foot in two degrees and thick rounded rim, the domed cover with pear-shaped finial. Also see Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, December 13th, 1979, no. 66, and Richard Delbr_ck, Antike Porphyrwerke, Berlin, 1932, p. 196, figs. 99 and 100, all three without their covers. In some cases, their form is reminiscent of Egyptian stone vessels, perhaps indicating that some of them could have been made in Egypt. A closely related example to the present urn and cover is said to have been acquired by the Earl of Ashburnham in Egypt (Sotheby & Co., London, April 24th, 1967, lot 70).
