Translated out of Greek into French, by James Amiot Abbot of Bellozane, Bishop of Auxerre, One of the King's Privy Counsel, and Great Almner of France. With the Lives of Hannibal & Scipio African, Translated out of Latin into French, by Charles del Escluse, And out of French into English, by Sir Thomas North Knight. Hereunto are added the Lives of Epaminondas, of Philip of Macedon, of Dionysius the Elder, Tyrant of Sicilia, of Augustus Cæsar, or Plutarch, and of Seneca: With the Lives of Nine other Excellent Chieftains of Warre: Collected out of Æmylius Probus, by S. G. S. And Englished by the aforesaid Translator. And now also in this Edition are Further Added, The Lives of Twenty Selected Eminent Persons, of Ancient and Latter Times, Translated out of the Work of that Famous Historiographer to the King of France and Poland, Andrew Thevet. To which, for clearer Explanation and Emendation of the former Translation {in Several Places} are Subjoyned Notes and Explications upon Plutarch's Lives, Collected out of Xylander, Creserus, Henry Stephanus and others, with the Synchronism's and Cotemporary Persons with Them, Shewing the Several Ages in which They Lived. (London: 'printed by Abraham Miller, and are to be sold by William Lee', 1656/7) Folio (310 x 210 mm), pp. (x) + 1031 + (1) + (1) + (20: index) + (iv) + 76 + (32: index). Rubricated title-page, engraved frontispiece, with facing letterpress explanation, elaborate engraved head- and tail-pieces and initials, some engraved portraits in the text. Title-page gives 1657 as year of publication, but engraved frontis. shows 1656. Contemporary, or near-contemporary panelled calf, well-worn, particularly along the spine, upper board detached (but present), lower board nearly so, some scattered foxing, time-staining, and a few small rust-marks, a few small marginal ink-spots. Bottom corner of one leaf (pp. 355/356) torn away, but with no loss to text. The pagination is idiosyncratic, as often with books of this era, but the text is continuous. Sir Thomas North lived 1535 to circa 1601. His translation of Amyot's French version of Plutarch's Parallel Lives has been described as an early masterpiece of English prose. Shakespeare drew heavily upon North's work in preparing several of his plays. Supplement to this edition includes lives of such later personalities as the Black Prince, Charlemagne, Tamburlaine, Atabalipa ('King of Peru'), Gutenberg, etc. Condition - Fair to good, London, printed by Abraham Miller, 1656/7
